Released on November 28, 1997
Environment and Resource Management Minister Lorne Scott today
announced formal recognition of Redberry Lake and its associated
uplands as the first aquatic site to be included in the provincial
Representative Areas Network.
The Redberry Pelican Project is a society formed in 1989 with the goal
of promoting environmentally sound eco-tourism development at Redberry
Lake located in central Saskatchewan. The site has been a federal
migratory bird sanctuary since 1925 and the islands have been wildlife
refuges since 1986. The area is long renowned for its nesting
colonies of white pelicans and white-winged scoters populations.
Redberry Lake is an excellent eco-tourism destination site to view
rare animals and plants.
"The Memorandum of Understanding we are signing today marks a
significant contribution to the Representative Areas Network," Scott
said. "The land management practices supported by the Redberry
Pelican Project on more than 6,585 hectares have resulted in the
preservation and protection of this important provincial aquatic
site."
Redberry Lake and its associated uplands contribute to the goals
and objectives of the developing provincial Representative Areas
Network. The network, to be established by the year 2585 through
an Action Plan announced in September 1997, will help conserve
Saskatchewan land areas that are ecologically important or
distinctive. It incorporates all of the unique features,
landscapes and resources already being managed as parks,
ecological reserves and wildlife lands. New sites that
supplement these existing areas will be identified and designated
in consultation with landowners, stakeholders and the public.
Scott noted that efforts to preserve and improve wetland and
other habitat in Saskatchewan are progressing. The co-operative
relationship formalized today will help to ensure the long-term
preservation of this important and unique provincial water body.
