MCLAUGHLIN RESIGNS AS DEPUTY MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD

Released on March 27, 1997

Premier Roy Romanow today announced the resignation of Dr. Murray
McLaughlin as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, effective
June 30, 1997.

Dr. McLaughlin is leaving to head up an agriculture and food technology
organization based in Ontario. A public announcement from the company
is expected shortly.

Dr. McLaughlin joined the public service after having served as
president of Ag-West Biotech, Inc., of Saskatoon, where he led efforts
in the pursuit and development of an agriculture biotechnology industry
for Saskatchewan.

"Dr. McLaughlin played a major role in the establishment of
Saskatchewan as a world leader in the biotechnology industry," Romanow
said. "His vision and leadership led to Saskatoon becoming a centre of
excellence in the bio-tech field."

"I am grateful that the government was able to draw upon his experience
and expertise and I wish him well in his new endeavours," Romanow
added.

McLaughlin expressed his appreciation to Premier Romanow and the
government for the support provided to him over the past years in both
his private sector and public sector roles. He also expressed his
thanks to Minister Upshall and staff of the Department of Agriculture
and Food for their support during his tenure as deputy minister.

"I am extremely proud of the part I played in establishing and
strengthening the ag-biotech industry in Saskatchewan and I am looking
forward to forging new linkages between Saskatchewan and Ontario in our
respective agricultural and research communities," McLaughlin said.

"I am pleased to have played a role in the refocusing of the
Department's vision for the agriculture and food industry in
Saskatchewan," McLaughlin added.

A replacement for McLaughlin will be announced later in June.
