EDUCATION WEEK MARCH 17-23

Released on March 12, 1997

Education Minister Pat Atkinson has declared March 17-23 as Education
Week in Saskatchewan. This year's theme is Saskatchewan: World-Class
Education.

"Our government, and all of our education partners, are dedicated to
ensuring we have the very best education system in our province,"
Atkinson said. "Saskatchewan people recognize that money spent on
public education is an investment in our future."

The minister also emphasized the importance of co-operation among the
education partners, particularly as decisions are being made about
possible structural change.

"The public education system belongs to all of us," Atkinson said.
"The strength of our system is the partnership among the government of
Saskatchewan and our various stakeholders. This partnership is
reflected in our decision to balance government leadership with local
determination as we make choices about education."

Schools and education officials will be organizing local Education Week
activities throughout the province. The provincial kick-off will
include a performance by the Oskiyak Song and Dance Troupe from St.
Mary's Community School in Saskatoon. The troupe will perform in the
rotunda of the Legislative Building prior to the sitting of the
Legislature on Monday, March 17, with Premier Roy Romanow and Minister
Atkinson in attendance.

The Education Week committee includes representatives from the
Department of Education, the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation, the
Saskatchewan School Trustees Association, the League of Educational
Administrators directors and superintendents, the Saskatchewan
Association of School Councils and the Federation of Saskatchewan
Indian Nations.
