Environment and Resource Management Minister Lorne Scott and Rocky
Mountain Elk Foundation Canadian Vice President Lyle Dorey today
signed an agreement that will help to buy and maintain important elk
and wildlife habitat throughout the province.
Under the agreement, the department and the foundation, a Montana
based international non-profit conservation organization, will provide
matching dollars for habitat conservation and enhancement. The
department will use funds from the Fish and Wildlife Development Fund
(FWDF), subject to availability, to a maximum of $250,000 per year
over five years. It gives the partners the potential to commit $2.5
million over the five year term of the agreement, towards habitat
conservation.
The wildlife component of the FWDF receives 30 per cent of all hunting
and trapping licence revenues. Wildlife lands purchased through the
fund provide food and shelter for many species. Natural habitat is
one of the key elements to the survival of approximately 400 species
of Saskatchewan birds and animals.
"We are taking a leadership role in working together in effective
partnerships to ensure a healthy environment and better management of
our resources," Scott said.
"The province and the foundation recognize wildlife's many ecological,
social and aesthetic contributions to the people of Saskatchewan."
This partnership approach to the conservation of habitat is critical
in helping Saskatchewan and Canada meet their commitment to preserving
biological diversity.
"This agreement recognizes the benefit of public and private sector
co-operation in achieving long term habitat conservation initiatives,"
Dorey said.
