PREMIER ROMANOW SALUTES THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF STANLEY KNOWLES

Released on June 9, 1997

Premier Roy Romanow today saluted the accomplishments of Stanley

Knowles - "a career of remarkable achievement."

Knowles, a leading legislator in the federal House of Commons for more

than 40 years, died today.

"He was a Canadian political leader cut from the cloth of J.S.

Woodsworth, M.J. Coldwell and Tommy Douglas," Romanow said.

"His career was one of remarkable achievement. Senior citizens in

particular owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Stanley Knowles. He

was a key figure in winning public pensions for Canadians."

Romanow noted Stanley Knowles' iron consistency throughout his career.

His first speech in the House of Commons in 1943 was about better

housing, lower unemployment - and better pensions for Canadians.

"He never wavered from his commitments and beliefs," Romanow said. "A

step at a time, using every trick in the Parliamentary rule book he

mastered so well, Stanley Knowles won many of his battles. Canadians

are the better for it."
