Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon and
Mainline Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA) Chairperson
Gary Cole today announced in Whitewood the formation of the province's
22nd Authority.
Members of the Mainline REDA include the towns of Whitewood,
Broadview, Grenfell and Wolseley, the rural municipalities of
Wolseley, Chester, Kingsley, Elcapo and Willowdale, and the Cowessess
First Nation.
Partners in the REDA include the East Central Development Corporation,
Mainline Rural Development Corporation and several private sector
partners. The REDA is actively seeking additional members and
partners.
"REDAs are a key component in the continued economic growth of
Saskatchewan," MacKinnon said. "The co-operative model on which they
are built has been proven to be the most effective method of
development and investment attraction in Saskatchewan.
"One of the objectives of the province's economic strategy,
Partnership for Growth, was to make REDAs a focal point for
economic development in their regions. I'm pleased to see that
the Mainline REDA is already busy pursuing economic opportunities
for the area."
REDAs allow municipal governments, community organizations,
private businesses and co-operatives to pool their
organizational, professional and financial resources in order to
encourage job creation and investment attraction.
Under the Partnership for Growth strategy, the province provides
cost-shared funding to REDAs, professional and technical advice
and is committed to examining the possibility of REDAs assuming
responsibility for delivering some existing provincial programs.
To date 21 other regional economic development authorities have
been established in the province in regions surrounding Hudson
Bay, Prince Albert, Rosetown, Swift Current, Meadow Lake,
Watrous, Saskatoon, Kindersley, Humboldt, Ituna, Yorkton,
Melfort, Biggar, Weyburn, Moosimin, Estevan, Assiniboia,
Melville, Moose Jaw, Outlook and Macklin.
