SASKATCHEWAN'S WATERBOMBER FLEET UPGRADED

Released on February 28, 1997

Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) Minister Lorne
Scott today announced the $7.2 million purchase of two Canadair CL-215
forest-fire water bombers to replace three Canso water bombers
purchased in 1980.

Designed specifically for fire suppression use, the two Canadair CL-215
aircraft are capable of delivering as much water to fires as the three
retiring Canso water bombers. CL-215 aircraft (about 170 mph) are
faster than Cansos (about 110 mph) and carry 1,200 gallons of water
compared to Canso's 800 gallon payload of water.

Other advantages of the CL-215 include better maneuverability, on board
fire retardant foam injectors and the ability to pick up water in
rougher wave conditions. The CL-215s are also newer and will require
fewer repairs to maintain operational status.

Delivery of the two CL-215 aircraft is scheduled for May 15 and the
existing Canso crews will be retrained to operate them in time for the
1997 forest fire season. Saskatchewan's fleet of fire suppression
aircraft will then consist of six CL-215 skimmer aircraft, six
land-based Tracker aircraft and five bird dog aircraft.

"The purchase is consistent with the recommendations of a recent forest
fire policy study which documented the need to upgrade the province's
air tanker fleet," Scott said. "In their day, the Canso water bombers
that are being retired did a great service to northerners and the
province."
