NATIONAL YEAR 2000 COMPUTER CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENED

Released on February 26, 1997

Deputy Premier and Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter
today joined with Gerald Fiske, general manager, Saskatchewan, IBM
Global Services, and Rosemary Walker, IBM Global Services Year 2000
spokesperson, to officially open the IBM Global Services Year 2000
Conversion Centre located in downtown Regina.

In May 1996, ISM and the Government of Saskatchewan announced a
strategic memorandum of understanding that enabled IBM Global Services
to establish a national Centre of Competency for year 2000 computer
transformation services.

"Saskatchewan's Partnership for Growth economic strategy recognizes the
importance of information technology and strategic partnerships,"
Lingenfelter said. "Proof of that is in the fact that this centre has
already created nearly 50 advanced technology jobs, with prospects for
another 100 immediate such jobs and a possible 50 more in the next year
or so."

The centre addresses a growing concern among information technology
users and professionals -- many of the information systems implemented
in the past 25 years utilize a two-digit date system. This is already
leading to problems with these systems being unable to recognize future
dates. This date disruption affects all areas of date-sensitive
information systems including hardware, software, data storage mediums
and report generation.

A large countdown clock at the opening provided a reminder that there
are only 1,039 days remaining until the year 2000 -- less than three
years left and the clock is ticking.

"The opening of the conversion centre to address this serious business
problem continues our IBM Global Services commitment to Saskatchewan,"
Fiske said. "For companies not addressing the millennium challenge
now, it may already by too late."

Fiske said the centre's achievement of ISO 9000 certification is a
proud accomplishment that provides concrete proof the centre meets
world class standards.

ISM, Canada's leading provider of information systems management
services, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of IBM Canada Ltd. Part of the
world-wide IBM Global Services team, ISM provides flexible information
technology solutions for businesses of all sizes and leading edge
solutions to manage desktop technologies. ISM employs more than 6,000
people in offices and computing centres in Vancouver, Edmonton,
Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Fredericton and
Moncton.
