Released on August 1, 1997
Environment and Resource Management Minister Lorne Scott today issued
a ban on open fires within specific campgrounds of the Centre and West
Blocks of Cypress Hills Provincial Park due to extreme fire hazard
conditions.
The ban also applies to wood fires in fire pits and barbecues within
the picnic sites and campgrounds as listed: Meadows, Sunset, Aspen
Grove and Horseshoe. Briquettes may, however, be used in facilities
approved by Environment and Resource Management in these campgrounds.
Outdoor enthusiasts must carry self-contained heating devices or
pressurized stoves for the duration of the ban.
As well, travel by vehicle off the Battle Creek Road in the West Block
and the Gap Road between the Centre and West Blocks is prohibited.
All the restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.
"I realize that these restrictions may cause inconvenience for some
campers this weekend, but open fires are simply too dangerous when
conditions are this extreme," Scott said.
