GRAVELBOURG UPGRADES PROGRESSING

Released on April 24, 1997

Minister responsible for Sask Water Eldon Lautermilch today announced

upgrades to Gravelbourg's water supply system are progressing right on

schedule.

The $1.9 million dollar project, announced in October 1996, will

include new pumps in the pumpstation at Thomson Lake, a new water

supply pipeline from Thomson Lake to Gravelbourg and upgrades to the

Gravelbourg Water Treatment Plant.

Part of the upgrade at the water treatment plant, a change from water

purification with chlorine to purification with chloramines, is set to

take place May 26. Disinfection by chloramines is used in Saskatoon,

Ottawa, Toronto, Victoria as well as many other Canadian and American

cities.

"Sask Water is committed to improving drinking water quality and

ensuring a stable supply of water for all Saskatchewan people,"

Lautermilch said. "The change to purification with chloramines will

help reduce the taste and odour problems generally experienced in

Gravelbourg's drinking water during the summer months."

The entire system upgrade is expected to be completed by September

1997.
