EDUCATION MINISTER ANNOUNCES NORTH BATTLEFORD JOINT USE PROJECT

Released on April 14, 1997

Education Minister Pat Atkinson today announced an expanded partnership

between the North Battleford Comprehensive High School and the North

West Regional College. Provincial funding of $2.77 million over the

next two years has been approved to move the Regional College into the

High School and to renovate the facility. This is in addition to $2.02

million in provincial funding which had been announced previously.

"This is a tremendous day for North Battleford," Atkinson said.

"Building on a partnership that already exists, students from both the

High School and the Regional College will have access to expanded

educational opportunities and improved facilities. We are enhancing

the quality of education in both institutions.

"I want to congratulate the local people who worked so hard to bring

this initiative to this point. Both the High School and the Regional

College will save money by sharing this facility. That money will be

redirected to support instructors, teachers and students," Atkinson

said.

Ben Christensen, chair of the North Battleford Public School Board,

said the board is pleased with the finalization of the joint use

project. "We evaluated the benefits of this proposal for the High

School, the Regional College and the community. We're building on a

partnership that already exists. In the end, we concluded that the

project would benefit everyone."

"Consolidating all our operations in North Battleford into one facility

has been our goal for a number of years," said Bryan Nylander,

president of North West Regional College. "The efficient use of

educational resources will benefit young people, adults, business and

communities in the North Battleford area."

The renovations are expected to begin in September 1997. The Regional

College already rents space from the High School and should be

completely moved in by September 1998. North West Regional College

will purchase equity in the building from the North Battleford Public

School Division.
