STEP INITIATES FIRST TRADE MISSION TO PROMOTE TRADE IN EUROPE

Released on September 27, 1996

Deputy Premier and Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter
will join the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) on
STEP's first major trade mission since its August launch. The mission
will visit several European countries Oct. 3 to 17.

The trade mission will explore business opportunities in Germany, the
Czech Republic, France, Turkey and Ukraine. Several Saskatchewan
companies will participate to develop new export markets and expand
existing ones, as well as discuss co-operative business ventures with
European companies. The focus will be on agricultural equipment and
services, agriculture biotechnology, film, video and television, and
the oil and gas sector.

"This trade mission is an effective partnership between government and
industry to develop and strengthen business opportunities outside of
Saskatchewan," Lingenfelter said. "Trade initiatives of this nature
are vital to our future prosperity, considering that one out of three
jobs in this province depends on trade outside of Saskatchewan."

"STEP, the Saskatchewan Opportunities Corporation, Saskatchewan Energy
and Mines, and several industry partners have initiated this mission to
strengthen our export markets in Europe, as well as promote investment
in Saskatchewan," said Milton Fair, Chair and CEO of STEP.

Saskatoon-based agriculture and food equipment manufacturer LMC-Lewis
M. Carter Manufacturing (Canada) Ltd. is making its first trip to
Europe to develop export sales for its grain and seed cleaning
machinery.

"We see great potential for our products in European markets,
particularly Ukraine," said Steven Chivilo, Manager, LMC-Lewis M.
Carter Manufacturing (Canada) Ltd.

One of the mission's highlights will be a visit to the International
Field Day in Germany where Saskatchewan companies will have an
opportunity to demonstrate the latest in agriculture equipment and
technology.

While in Turkey, the minister will deliver the key note address at an
international conference on oilseed processing. Trade mission members
will meet with Turkish government officials and industry
representatives to discuss expanding trade relationships.

In Ukraine, Saskatchewan oil and gas companies will explore
partnerships in the development of Ukraine's energy resources. The
Deputy Premier will meet with senior government officials to build on
the strong relationship that exists between the province and Ukraine.

Lingenfelter will support the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Association's
marketing efforts at MIPCOM, an international television marketing
conference in France. Also attending the conference will be
representatives from Minds Eye Productions, The Edge Productions and
Cinepost Productions.
