CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH PROCLAIMED

Released on September 27, 1996

Social Services Minister Lorne Calvert today announced that October has
been proclaimed Child Abuse Prevention Month.

"The abuse and mistreatment of children is something no one wants to
believe happens in our communities," Calvert said. "The sad truth is
that is does happen in all areas of our cities and across the
province."

Calvert said if as a society we want our children to be safe we all
need to take an active role in preventing child abuse.

In partnership with communities across the province, the government
through Saskatchewan's Action Plan for Children, is working to provide
programs and services which support the development of healthy families
and assist families in crisis to care for and value their children.

"I am very pleased that communities, agencies and government have been
able to work so well together to develop such unique and important
programs and services for children and families. In the last few
years, together we have done a great deal in this area, but there is
still a lot to do."

Calvert said supporting the development of healthy, happy children will
not only produce healthier families, but also a healthier society.

"Everyone of us plays a very important role in the lives of all
Saskatchewan children. I hope this month will remind us of the
responsibility we all share," Calvert said.
