Andy Renaud, minister responsible for Saskatchewan Transportation
Company (STC), today announced that the first of a new line of smaller,
more fuel-efficient buses was added to the STC fleet. The new buses
will begin servicing passengers along the Regina to Coronach schedule
next week.
"STC bought four, 35-passenger, medium-sized coaches from Crestline
Coaches of Saskatoon at a cost of just over $1 million," Renaud said.
"The introduction of the medium-sized coaches is part of STC's
strategic five-year business plan and is the first time a medium-sized
bus will be used on regular intercity routes in Canada."
The minister said the next step in the STC plan is to tender for five
buses even smaller than the four which are being added to the fleet
this month. Planned for delivery in 1997, these buses will seat
between 17 and 21 passengers. One bus this size is already part of the
STC fleet.
"These buses get better mileage than any coach in our fleet and over
time this will result in reduced costs," said STC President Peter
Glendinning.
"Not only do these smaller coaches make common sense economically, they
are a great opportunity to improve our passenger service," Renaud said.
"These smaller coaches can be used on lower ridership routes because,
with the introduction of STC Courier Express, buses are no longer
required to be big enough to move freight."
The four medium-sized buses will replace aging equipment in the STC
fleet.
STC has served the people of Saskatchewan since 1946, linking more than
200 communities with passenger and parcel services.
