ROMANOW URGES RECOMMITMENT OF CANADA'S SOCIAL PROGRAMS

Released on September 12, 1996

Premier Roy Romanow today called on the prime minister and other
premiers to recommit themselves urgently to reform Canada's social
programs.

"There is no better place to start than child poverty, a blight on our
rich nation," Romanow said while speaking in Vancouver today to the
Vancouver Board of Trade.

"As well, we can put an end to bickering over national standards on
health. By setting national standards through federal, provincial and
territorial co-operation, we can restore the public's confidence in our
ability to protect core Canadian values."

Romanow highlighted Saskatchewan's strong economic growth, fiscal
stability and export performance, and underlined the importance of
Saskatchewan's partnership with British Columbia, Saskatchewan's
gateway to the pacific.

"Saskatchewan is an excellent place to invest," Romanow concluded.
