FIRE BAN/TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS IN CYPRESS HILLS PROVINCIAL PARK LIFTED

Released on September 6, 1996

Environment and Resource Management Minister Lorne Scott today
announced that fire hazard conditions have improved enough to lift the
ban on all open fires in the Centre and West Blocks of Cypress Hills
Provincial Park.

The restrictions, in effect from August 29 until today, included a ban
on travel by vehicle off the Battle Creek Road in the park's West
Block.

"The cooler weather, along with the excellent co-operation we received
from campers and travellers, helped us to avoid problems over the
Labour Day long weekend," Scott said.

Fire hazard conditions, which were in the extreme range for Cypress
Hills area and much of the northern provincial forest, are now
moderate.
