Released on September 3, 1996
Clay Serby, minister responsible for SGI's Auto Fund, today announced
the introduction of short-term registration, which allows vehicle
owners flexibility in choosing vehicle registration terms.
The Short-Term Vehicle Registration and Insurance program takes effect
Sept. 16, 1996. The program allows vehicle owners to choose one of
several registration terms. Registration terms must be no less than 89
days and no more than 364 days. If vehicle owners decide to extend the
registration period, they must extend it by a minimum of 89 days.
"Short-term registration is an excellent option, especially for people
who license seasonal vehicles, like motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles
or even grain trucks," Serby said.
The Short-Term Vehicle Registration and Insurance Program is part two
of a three-step process to improve customer service at SGI.
Step one, Daily Vehicle Expiry, was introduced earlier this year and
takes effect in February 1997. By renewing their vehicle registration
on pre-determined, specific dates throughout the month, customers will
avoid the inconvenience of long month-end lineups caused by all
renewals expiring on the last day of the month.
"The third step is AutoPay, which will be introduced in early 1997,"
Serby said. "AutoPay will allow vehicle owners the option of monthly
vehicle registration payments which are withdrawn automatically from
their bank accounts.
"All three of these initiatives were undertaken to offer more choices
and greater convenience for Saskatchewan motorists."
Today, Saskatchewan motorists enjoy among the lowest auto insurance
rates in the country, due in part to the efficiency of the Auto Fund.
In 1995, the Auto Fund's counterparts in British Columbia and Manitoba
had operating costs of $147.26 per registered vehicle and $103.44 per
registered vehicle respectively. Saskatchewan's Auto Fund was the
lowest of the three Crown entities, with operating costs of only $55.15
per registered vehicle.
"The Auto Fund continues to make improvements that make a difference to
Saskatchewan people -- leading the way with tough new drinking and
driving legislation, traffic safety programs and convenient, affordable
registration options," Serby said.
