SASKATCHEWAN'S FAMILY FISHING WEEKEND JUNE 8 AND 9
Released on May 31, 1996
Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) Minister Lorne Scott today announced that June 8 and 9 will be Family Fishing Weekend in Saskatchewan.
Scott said that on these days Saskatchewan residents and visitors may fish without a licence. National parks still require their own fishing licence. All other fishing regulations will remain in effect.
"This is a good time to introduce a friend or family member to one of our most popular outdoor leisure activities, recreational fishing," Scott said.
Scott said Family Fishing Weekend is a program aimed at promoting recreational fishing. Developed in 1989, it's designed for people to experience the fun of recreational fishing with friends and family, while teaching young people about the province's water resources.
As in the past, special events have been organized throughout the province. Many community and school groups, fishing clubs, and conservation agencies have fishing-related activities planned this weekend.
For example, the Cypress Hills Trout Festival in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park will offer fly-casting workshops conducted by internationally known fly-fisherman Dave Whitlock, along with many other fishing-related activities and displays throughout the weekend.
At Wynyard Regional Park, activities are planned for June 9 to celebrate the successful operation of the lake aeration system installed last fall by SERM's Fish Enhancement Program.
"Saskatchewan is a great place to fish and we want to emphasize to everyone the importance of this resource," Scott said. "The more people become aware of the fish resource and its value, the more they will protect and preserve the quality of our lakes and streams."
