DONATION OF MORE THAN 1,000 COMPUTERS TO SASKATCHEWAN SCHOOLS

Released on March 22, 1996

Education Minister Pat Atkinson and Carol Teichrob, minister
responsible for SaskTel, today announced that more than 1,000 used
computers from the Government of Saskatchewan and Crown corporations
will be donated to schools through the Computers for Schools program.

"The provincial government's commitment to the Computers for Schools
program supports our priority to provide students with computer-based
learning," Atkinson said. "While these computers are obsolete in
relation to the changing business and program needs of government
departments and Crown corporations, they support the growing
information and technological literacy of young students so they can
thrive in the global, knowledged-based economy."

The program is co-ordinated by the volunteer group, SaskTel Pioneers.
Used computers donated by government departments and Crown corporations
are turned over to the Pioneers who refurbish them and then distribute
them to schools. SaskTel has donated workspace in Prince Albert,
Saskatoon and Regina to support the Pioneers in this initiative.

"I commend the SaskTel Pioneer volunteers for their commitment to
Computers for Schools," Teichrob said. "SaskTel's donation of
workspace and support to the Pioneers in this initiative supports our
government-wide commitment to Saskatchewan schools. We are pleased to
help the Pioneers use their special skills and knowledge of computers
to help students in classrooms."

A provincial advisory committee with representatives from SSTA, STF,
Saskatchewan Association of School Business Officials, Saskatchewan
Federation of Home and School Associations, the SaskTel Pioneers and
Saskatchewan Education has devised priority-setting criteria to ensure
the computers are distributed in a fair and equitable manner.

"We are extremely happy to support the Computers for Schools program,"
said Gary Headington, co-ordinator of Computers for Schools, SaskTel
Pioneers. "SaskTel Pioneers is a volunteer organization dedicated to
excellence in education. Education is a main area of service for us
and the Computers for Schools program fits in nicely."

To date, 185 proposals have been received from schools and school
divisions. In addition to significant donations of computers by the
provincial government, other levels of government, private industry and
business are being encouraged to participate in the program. Schools
interested in being placed on the priority list can send in a request
to Computers for Schools Co-ordinator, SaskTel Pioneers, 1301 Quebec
