WORLD WATER DAY MARCH 22

Released on March 18, 1996

Eldon Lautermilch, minister responsible for Sask Water, today reminded
Saskatchewan residents that March 22 has been designated World Water
Day by the United Nations.

The goal of World Water Day is to promote public awareness of the need
to conserve and protect freshwater supplies.

"Water is vital to our health, social well-being and economic
development," Lautermilch said. "Unfortunately, it's also something
many people take for granted."

Lautermilch said that although many Saskatchewan residents enjoy a
secure supply of quality water, there are many water-related issues
that need understanding and co-operation to overcome. These issues
include both water quality and supply, and needs can vary greatly from
one part of the province to another. There are often competing demands
on the same water source for domestic, industrial, agricultural,
recreational and wildlife habitat users.

"Saskatchewan residents are lucky to have a good supply of water,"
Lautermilch said. "But we can't afford to ignore the importance of
water to the quality of our lives and the environment we share."
