Deputy Premier and Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter hasinvited all Saskatchewan Members of Parliament to meet with him to
discuss the future of the Atomic Energy Canada Ltd. (AECL) presence in
Saskatchewan.
The meeting will take place Monday, June 10 in Ottawa, as the minister
travels to the Committee on Internal Trade meeting in Quebec City.
"I believe there are very productive options for the future of AECL in
Saskatchewan and the province is pursuing these options in discussions
with the corporation," Lingenfelter said. "I am calling on all
Saskatchewan Members of Parliament to support us in our attempts to
retain the jobs and benefits that an updated agreement on AECL's future
in Saskatchewan would provide.
"The federal government must recognize that there is a future for AECL
in Saskatchewan, given our natural resources and research strengths."
Saskatchewan provided funding for an AECL office in Saskatoon in 1993.
That agreement expires in December of this year. The recent federal
budget reduced funding to AECL and the corporation is considering a
major restructuring as a result. A public announcement on
restructuring is expected later this month.
"Saskatchewan has a proud history of pioneering work in the peaceful
applications of nuclear science," Lingenfelter said. "I feel it is
vital to work in co-operation with the federal government to build on
that foundation.
"The Partnership for Growth strategy identifies advanced technology as
a vital building block for Saskatchewan's economy. Under the strategy,
Saskatchewan researchers, business and government are working in
partnership to aggressively pursue projects such as the synchrotron
facility, biofermentation facilities and information technology
initiatives, as well as options for a continued AECL presence in our
province.
"These are strategic investments generating long-term economic activity
and jobs for the province, giving our young people the opportunity to
pursue their career goals and raise their families right here at home."
