BUFFALO POUND TROUT POND CLOSED

Released on July 30, 1996

Access to the Buffalo Pound Provincial Park trout pond is closed until
further notice due to a Blue-Green Algae bloom.

People should avoid swimming in or drinking water where algae blooms
have appeared. Livestock owners and pet owners are also advised to
keep their animals away from surface water laden with the blooms.

Algae blooms are heavy concentrations of blue-green algae which give
the water a soupy appearance, usually blue-green, bright blue, grey or
tan in color.

This particular algae bloom has caused a recent partial fish kill at
the Buffalo Pound trout pond, resulting in its temporary closure.

There is potential for a heavy growth of algae in southern Saskatchewan
lakes each summer as the water temperature rises. Algae blooms may
rapidly appear and disappear, particularly in windy or rainy
conditions.

The water quality in the pond is being analyzed by the provincial lab.
The pond will be restocked with rainbow trout when water quality
returns to a stable condition.

The time frame for recovery of the pond is unknown, but it is being
monitored on a weekly basis.
