MCLAUGHLIN APPOINTED DEPUTY MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD

Released on January 9, 1996

Premier Roy Romanow today announced the appointment of Dr. Murray
McLaughlin as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food.

His appointment is effective March 11, 1996.

"Dr. McLaughlin brings with him more than twenty-five years of
agricultural experience and has worked with all levels of government
and the academic and research sectors," Romanow said.

Dr. McLaughlin has most recently been President of Ag-West Biotech,
Inc., of Saskatoon, where he has led efforts in the pursuit and
development of new biotechnology projects for agriculture.

"Ag-West Biotech has been recognized as a leader in the field of
agricultural biotechnology and Dr. McLaughlin deserves full credit for
his hands-on contribution to its ongoing success. I am pleased and
excited that he is joining us, given Ag-West's contribution to the
diversification and expansion of the provincial economy."

Dr. McLaughlin holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences and a Master of
Science Degree, both from Cornell University.

"Dr. McLaughlin has a long record of involvement with agriculture and
the agricultural industry in Saskatchewan. I look forward to working
with him in his new position and am confident that the province will
benefit from the talent and ability he brings to the job," Romanow said.

McLaughlin replaces Terry Scott who has been serving as Acting Deputy
Minister since the departure of Hartley Furtan in June 1995.

Romanow also expressed his appreciation to Mr. Scott, who returns to
his former position as Assistant Deputy Minister, for his hard work and
dedication to the department.
