SHILLINGTON TO UNDERTAKE ECONOMIC MISSION TO CHINA

Released on January 5, 1996

Ned Shillington, minister responsible for Intergovernmental Relations
today announced that he will be leaving January 5 for a ten day
economic mission to China to further promote trade links for the
agricultural and potash sectors.

In Beijing, Shillington has been invited to deliver the keynote address
at a potash conference, co-sponsored by the Chinese Government and
Canpotex, the Saskatchewan-based company which acts as the offshore
marketing arm for the province's potash industry. The focus of the
conference is the Balanced Fertilizer program used to demonstrate to
Chinese farmers the value of using potash fertilizer to boost food
production.

"China is the second largest international market for Saskatchewan's
potash, and this province has maintained more than 50 per cent of the
market share against growing pressure from other suppliers,"
Shillington said. "Our success in China is based on a long-term
commitment to increase agricultural productivity through the use of
potash fertilizer."

Following the conference, the minister will meet with Chinese officials
to promote potash sales, livestock and animal genetics trade and
discuss the World Bank's grain handling and distribution China project
in which the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool is a major player.

Shillington will also meet with officials in Jilin, Saskatchewan's
sister province, to begin preparations for the next round of 'twinning'
plans expected to begin this spring.

"There is exciting potential for joint ventures in agriculture,
telecommunications, energy and cultural industries. This visit will
help to keep this momentum going," Shillington said.

The mission will end in Hong Kong where Shillington will meet with
local business people with interests in Saskatchewan, and with the
Commission of Canada related to investor immigration matters.
