Released on April 22, 1996
Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced that
Nipawin has been chosen as the site of the 1998 Saskatchewan Winter
Games.
The games will be held in February, 1998, and are expected to attract
more than 2,000 athletes, coaches, managers and officials from across
the province.
"Nipawin has been awarded the games for the first time in the 24-year
history of the event," Teichrob said. "The community has demonstrated
a great deal of planning and preparation in its bid package. It has
hosted numerous provincial, national and international events from
curling, softball, ringette and hockey to the Nipawin Vanity Cup,
Canada's largest Walleye Tournament.
"The community of Nipawin has undertaken numerous capital improvements
including upgrading of skiing facilities, as well as improvements to
the Jubilee Arena and other indoor facilities. It is enthusiastic and
has a strong commitment as evidenced by the support from the Town
Council and the 1,500 volunteers prepared to work at the games."
Teichrob said the Saskatchewan Games Program operates on a four-year
cycle, alternating every second year between winter and summer games.
The games provide high calibre provincial competition in 18 different
sports. Each of the eight sport zones in Saskatchewan holds playdowns
to select their teams for participation in the games.
A site evaluation committee of the Saskatchewan Games Council
recommended the selection of Nipawin to host the games. Council
membership includes Sask Sport Inc., the Saskatchewan High Schools
Athletic Association, zone sport councils, Saskatchewan Municipal
Government, and others who represent the broader sport community in
Saskatchewan.
The council is a permanent regulatory body whose responsibilities also
include rules of competitor eligibility, number of athletes and
officials per sport, and games facility standards.
Funding for the games is provided by Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund,
corporate sponsors, Saskatchewan Municipal Government, the host
community and souvenir sales.
