NEW POLICE SERVICE FOR ENGLISH RIVER FIRST NATION

Released on October 5, 1995

Federal Solicitor General Herb Gray, Justice Minister Bob Mitchell and
Chief Archie Campbell today announced an agreement to establish a new
on-reserve policing service for the English River First Nation.

Under the agreement, two members of the RCMP-First Nations Community
Policing Service will reside at the English River First Nation and work
out of a community office. Policing services will also be provided to
the neighbouring community of Patuanak. In the past, policing services
for the English River First Nation were provided by the RCMP detachment
at Beauval, 90 kilometres south.

Elders will assist the police with their work and a Police Management
Board, with local membership, has been established to help set policing
priorities and improve police-community accountability.

"This agreement strengthens police accountability to the English River
First Nation," Mitchell said. "The Saskatchewan government is pleased
to have a role in helping improve the safety and security of First
Nation communities."

"The federal government, through the First Nations Policing Policy, is
committed to working with First Nations to ensure that practical and
culturally appropriate policing services are in place for First Nations
communities in Canada," Gray said. "This new police service is a
further example of this commitment."

"It will be a significant step forward to have First Nations police
officers living and working in our community," Chief Campbell said.
"Their work with our police management board and the assistance
provided by our elders will ensure that our policing services meet the
needs of our community and are sensitive to our culture."

The federal government will pay 52 per cent and the provincial
government 48 per cent of the cost of establishing and maintaining the
new police service.
