Premier Roy Romanow this weekend discussed market opportunities for
Saskatchewan agricultural equipment manufacturers when he met with
farmers and machinery dealers from the Golzow agricultural co-operative
in Golzow, Germany.
Romanow was joined at the meeting by officials from Flexi-Coil Ltd. and
Brandt Industries, who also gave presentations on behalf of Morris
Industries, Shulte Industries and Precision Metal. The premier is
leading a trade and investment mission to western Europe and Ukraine
focusing on the key economic sectors of agricultural machinery,
agricultural biotechnology, energy and cultural industries.
During the trade mission, Brandt Industries concluded a sale for its
first shipment of grain augers to eastern Germany.
"Saskatchewan people have many things in common with the people of
Germany, including the feelings we share about the importance of
co-operatives, and in particular, agricultural co-operatives," Romanow
said. "Some of our largest companies are co-operatives, such as the
farmer-run Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. We are here along with
Saskatchewan farm machinery manufacturers such as Flexi-Coil Ltd. and
Brandt Industries, to talk about the possibility of doing business
together - co-operative ventures that will benefit the people of
Saskatchewan and Germany."
The European agricultural equipment market is estimated at $5.5 billion
annually, with opportunities identified for direct equipment and
component sales.
"The manufacture of agricultural equipment and related technology is
the largest manufacturing sector in Saskatchewan, with about 100
companies employing close to 5,000 people. The quality of the products
and services Saskatchewan companies provide has led to record sales of
$420 million dollars in 1994 for our farm equipment manufacturers.
The agricultural co-operative at Golzow has 7,300 hectares in Germany
and 3,000 hectares in a Ukraine joint venture. The co-operative also
operates an agricultural equipment dealership.
"The ability of Saskatchewan companies to develop partnerships with
groups such as the Golzow co-operative could provide a more cost
effective approach to developing new markets in eastern Germany and
throughout eastern Europe."
"We are committed to developing more innovative and efficient
technology, and we are committed to developing our export markets so
this technology will benefit farmers around the world." Romanow said.
