SASKATCHEWAN TO PARTICIPATE IN SPIRIT OF PEACE RUN

Released on November 3, 1995

Premier Roy Romanow today participated in the national "Spirit of
Peace" Run as he officially lit Saskatchewan's peace torch and passed
it to Regina veteran Harold Hague. The torch was then passed to a
peacekeeper and students, who ran with it to Regina's City Hall from
where it will be taken to Saskatoon for a second ceremony on Nov. 4.

"Through this gesture we have symbolically 'passed the torch' of
responsibility to society's next keepers of peace," Romanow said. "We
pay tribute to our veterans and support our Canadian peacekeepers
maintaining peace and providing humanitarian help to troubled areas
around the world."

The run is an event of national Veterans Week, Nov. 4 to 12. It links
the Canada Remembers program, which commemorates those who contributed
to Canada's war effort 50 years ago, with the United Nations 50th
Anniversary.

Jack Scarfe of Saskatoon will represent Saskatchewan in a "Spirit of
Peace" ceremony in Ottawa on Nov. 9, when peace torches from all
provinces and territories will be regrouped to light one single torch
for peace.

"The 'Spirit of Peace' Run is an opportunity for Canadians to create an
awareness for youth of those who sacrificed so much to restore world
peace 50 years ago and the efforts, commitment and dedication required
to maintain peace throughout the world," Romanow said.
