GOVERNMENT CONGRATULATES THOMSON MEATS ON EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT

Released on May 11, 1995

Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter and Municipal
Government Minister Carol Carson said today the future expansion of
Thomson Meats Ltd. of Melfort is further evidence of the strength of
Saskatchewan's food processing industry.

Lingenfelter and Carson officiated at a sod-turning for the $4-million
expansion to the meat processing plant. Also participating in the
ceremony were Thomson Meats chief executive officer Lorne Thomson,
board chairman Rusty Thomson, vice-president and general manager Henry
Sawatsky, and Mayor Arnold Orr of Melfort.

The 25,000 square foot expansion, to be completed in three phases by
the fall of 1996, will involve the addition of new blast freezers,
coolers, production equipment and production areas. Through the
expansion, Thomson Meats expects to double both its 70-person workforce
and its $10 million to $13 million in annual sales.

"Thomson Meats is one of the many value-added companies that are
transforming Saskatchewan's economy," Lingenfelter said. "Food
processing was identified in the Partnership for Renewal strategy as a
strategic sector primed for growth, and aggressive exporters like
Thomson Meats are contributing to that growth."

Carson said the promise of additional jobs is welcome news for the
Melfort area.

"Thomson Meats is one of this city's major corporations and the
expansion will result in significant spin-off benefits to the economy
of our region," Carson said.

Thomson Meats Ltd., a division of TML Foods Inc., was incorporated in
1960 and has grown from a small butcher shop into a federally-licensed,
integrated meat processing facility providing a variety of fresh and
processed food items.

The company has made significant inroads into the Japanese market with
its Breakfast Beef (a breakfast bacon made from beef rather than pork)
product and sells one-quarter of its production to Japan. In 1994 the
company was honored with an Achievement in Business Excellence (ABEX)
award as Saskatchewan's business of the year.
