LINGENFELTER WELCOMES CP RAIL EXPANSION IN MOOSE JAW
Released on May 8, 1995
Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter today welcomed the announcement that CP Rail System is constructing a second track east along its mainline for 4.8 km between Moose Jaw and Pasqua, and is expanding its diesel locomotive maintenance program in Moose Jaw.
The expanded locomotive maintenance program is expected to create nearly 50 jobs at the company's Moose Jaw facility over the next five years, and twice that number over the next decade.
The double-tracking will result in operating efficiencies which will reduce travel time for freight trains and expedite the movement of grain, potash, coal and containers to major Canadian and United States centres, as well as saving the railway more than 700 litres of fuel per day. The construction will create 125 person-years of employment.
"Saskatchewan, more than any other province, is truly a part of the global marketplace," Lingenfelter said. "This announcement by CP Rail System will help ensure the products and commodities of our major exporters get out to their international customers quickly and efficiently.
"Whether it's wood products, potash, uranium, grains, oil and gas, technology, or any of hundreds of processed and manufactured products, our economic base is diversifying and expanding like never before.
"Railways have been vital to the development of Saskatchewan since the earliest days of settlement. Rail has also been a major part of Moose Jaw's economy. Although air, road, pipeline and electronic movement of people, goods, services and information have since transformed our transportation picture, rail still plays a vital role."
