Released on March 31, 1995
Justice Minister Ned Shillington today announced that $75,000 will be
provided to the town of Martensville to assist with debts incurred by
the town's now-disbanded police force in the course of handling a child
sexual abuse case.
"The resources of this small municipal police force were severely
strained by the demands of investigating a case involving multiple
child victims and multiple accused, including members of the force
itself," Shillington said.
The Martensville police force began investigating reports of child
sexual abuse in 1991 and laid charges against nine people by June,
1992. Three trials were held involving five accused, resulting in the
convictions of two accused in relation to 16 offences. Charges against
the remaining seven individuals, including former Martensville police
officers, were stayed by the Crown.
"Because of the extraordinary circumstances in this case, assistance is
being provided to the town of Martensville to ease the financial burden
on its citizens," Shillington said.
