Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter will attend the
Pacific Northwest Biotechnology Exposition Jan. 26 and 27 in Vancouver
to support the marketing efforts of several Saskatchewan biotechnology
companies.
This is the third Pacific Northwest Biotechnology Exposition to be
held. It will be hosted by the B.C. Biotechnology Alliance and is
intended to showcase the growing and dynamic biotechnology communities
in B.C., Washington, Oregon, and for the first time, Saskatchewan and
Alberta.
"The Pacific Northwest is one of the hot spots for biotechnology in the
United States," Lingenfelter said. "We need to establish significant
linkages with business and research institutions to further develop our
own biotech establishment."
Up to 500 delegates, including senior executives from major
biotechnology companies in the Pacific Northwest, are expected to
attend the conference. Individuals attending both the conference and
the trade show include investors, researchers, entrepreneurs and
business leaders.
Saskatchewan organizations participating include Ag-West Biotech Inc.,
a non-profit enterprise dedicated to promoting and supporting the
growth of Saskatchewan's biotechnology capabilities.
Other Saskatchewan participants include the Economic Development
Authority of Saskatoon, Minerva Animal Health Corporation, Innovation
Place research and development park, MicroBio RhizoGen Corp., and
Saskatchewan Economic Development.
"Saskatchewan's agricultural biotechnology industry has grown by 300
per cent in the last three years," Lingenfelter said. "International
linkages with our fast-growth, technology-driven companies were
identified as a major opportunity in the Partnership for Renewal
strategy and we are continuing to aggressively pursue those
opportunities so Saskatchewan biotech enterprises can continue to
create jobs and economic activity."
While in Vancouver, Lingenfelter will discuss Saskatchewan economic
opportunities with the Asia Pacific Foundation and the Canada China
Trade Development Association.
