Associate Health Minister Lorne Calvert today called on the people of
Saskatchewan to recognize February as Heart Month by taking steps to
ensure that their lifestyles contribute to good heart health.
"I commend the efforts of non-profit associations, such as the Heart
and Stroke Foundation and the Saskatchewan Heart Health Program, in
their efforts to raise awareness about heart health," Calvert said.
The minister said these two organizations are working to educate people
in communities across Saskatchewan on how to take better care of their
hearts. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is also helping to fund
research into the prevention of heart disease and stroke which claim
3,000 lives in this province every year.
"I encourage people in Saskatchewan to take preventive steps to keep
their hearts healthy. Although some risk factors are hereditary, heart
disease is related mostly to lifestyle. The decisions we make every
day regarding diet, exercise, whether to smoke, and coping with stress
affect our heart health."
Saskatchewan Health has undertaken several measures to help
Saskatchewan residents lower their risk of heart disease. It offers
workshops on healthful eating and several publications which advise
people on how to reduce their cholesterol by eating less fat and more
fibre. Information is also available on managing stress and on the
benefits of daily physical activity.
Saskatchewan Health, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Health Canada
fund the Saskatchewan Heart Health Program which educates people about
risk factors related to heart disease. The program has developed two
community projects in partnership with the Coteau Hills Heart Health
Coalition and the Regina Heart Healthy Partners to demonstrate ways of
reducing risk to people in these communities.
"We are focusing on health promotion and disease prevention as a vital
part of health renewal in this province. These principles certainly
apply to maintaining good heart health."
