GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES FUNDING TO FILM INDUSTRY

Released on February 14, 1995

Municipal Government Minister Carol Carson today announced a
three-year, $4-million agreement between the government of Saskatchewan
and the Saskatchewan Film and Video Development Corporation (SaskFilm).

Carson said the film and video industry, through SaskFilm and the
Saskatchewan Motion Picture Association, demonstrated the need for a
multi-year funding agreement with the government to allow them to take
advantage of opportunities in the expanding entertainment and
information industries; and, to act as seed money to attract private
sector investment.

"The film and video industry has contributed significantly to the
economic renewal of the province by creating jobs and by attracting
out-of-province investment," Carson said. "The total value of economic
activity directly related to the film and video industry in
Saskatchewan exceeded $33 million last year and we expect this year to
be even better."

Carson said that an independent study of the film and video industry
last year revealed that SaskFilm investments have generated $10 of
production activity for each $1 invested.

"Based on these projections, this agreement is expected to generate
approximately $40 million of production activity over the next three
years."
Carson said the production activity will create approximately 1,200
employment opportunities for Saskatchewan people with specialized
skills, who might otherwise look for work outside the province, and
will generate about $130 million of economic activity throughout the
three-year term of the agreement.

"A healthy and thriving film and video industry will also allow
Saskatchewan to take advantage of growth opportunities presented by the
development of the information highway and the recent approval of
specialty TV channels," Carson said. "The Saskatchewan industry has
proven expertise and experience in the development of content for these
markets."
