SIMARD RESIGNS HEALTH PORTFOLIO

Released on February 2, 1995

Louise Simard today announced that she has resigned as minister of
health.

"Premier Romanow recently asked all members of cabinet and caucus to
indicate whether they plan to seek re-election at the time of the next
general election," Simard said. "After a great deal of consideration
and discussion with my family, I have decided not to stand for
re-election."

Simard said that for the time being, she will continue to serve her
constituents as the MLA for Regina Hillsdale.

"I want to thank Premier Romanow for the confidence he displayed in me
three-and-a-half years ago when he asked me to serve as minister of
health, knowing this would be a challenging period of unprecedented
reform.

"The premier has shown great wisdom in taking a planned approach to
health reform which has secured a quality, accessible health system for
all."

Simard said she would also like to thank her family and her
constituents for their support over the years.

"I would also like to thank the thousands of people across this
province who have worked to improve the health of their families and
their communities."
Simard said she intends to pursue a new career and will have more
details on her future plans at a later date.
