THIN ICE EXISTS NEAR AERATION SYSTEMS

Released on December 5, 1995

Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management today issued a warning
that thin ice and open water exist near a number of aeration systems
throughout the province.

Areas near open water or suspected thin ice will be blocked off with
posted notices warning lake users of the hazards. The public is asked
to stay clear of these posted areas. Lake users are also cautioned
that aeration systems can create thin ice hazards throughout a water
body, not just immediately adjacent to the aeration system location.

Aeration systems generally operate during the winter season when an
early freeze-up, prolonged cold weather and heavy snowfall can combine
to reduce oxygen levels and kill fish. Compressors circulate fresh air
within the lake to increase the rate of fish survival throughout the
winter.

Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, with assistance from
the local community, park boards and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation
branches will operate 28 aeration projects this winter, from December
to the end of March. Projects are developed, using fish enhancement
funds from angling licence sales, to protect selected small lakes from
the threat of winterkill. Aeration projects provide year-round fishing
opportunities to areas where fish survival has been limited.
