Planning out acres can be a daunting annual task and is important whether you have 160 acres (about twice the area of a large shopping mall) or 16,000 acres (about the area of Cleveland, Ohio).
Good record keeping makes planning easier and can help to ensure that crops and pesticides are part of a rotation to help manage diseases and residuals.
Here are some methods to effectively keep track of what has been and will be on your acres:
- Crop Planning Guide and Crop Planner
- Excel Spreadsheet
- Easy to create, track and export
- Photocopying an RM map and colour-coding fields
- Visual aid in tracking fields
- Handwritten documents
- Companion to other forms of documentation
- Easy to start
Keeping documents about your operation can assist with tracking which herbicides were used on which fields. Some herbicides have residual properties and keeping track of those herbicides can prevent damage to sensitive crops in future crop rotations.
So, why go through all this extra work? Keeping track of what is in your fields can make planning much simpler. This can assist with ordering chemicals, fertilizer and seeds for the next season or seasons.
