Welcome to the October edition of Agriview+
Minister's MessageAs the 2023 harvest winds down across Saskatchewan, it’s a good time to review some key items from the last few months.
I was honoured to host delegations from the U.S., Mexico and Canada in Saskatoon for several days in August at the Tri-National Agricultural Accord. This annual summit was an opportunity to continue building on our strong relationships with key trading partners and emphasize the importance of open trade across North America.
Dry conditions were prevalent in regions throughout the province this past season, particularly the southwest. As the summer progressed, we worked at every level to help organize support for farmers and ranchers to lessen the impact of this challenging situation. In August, we announced $70 million in provincial funds to help offset extraordinary costs of feeding livestock to help maintain the breeding herd in Saskatchewan. For program information, visit scic.ca or call 1-844-723-1211. In July, the federal and provincial governments also announced that Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation was doubling the low yield appraisal threshold values to allow additional acres of cereal, pulse, canola and flax crops to be diverted to feed without negatively impacting future individual coverage. We were also pleased the federal government acknowledged the challenges of drought in Saskatchewan in the form of livestock tax deferral in designated regions throughout Western Canada.
We recommend producers reach out to the specialists at any of our 10 Ministry of Agriculture regional offices across Saskatchewan about alternative feeding strategies, pasture management, assistance with water testing or interpretation of feed and water test results. For agronomic advice, program information or other pathfinding services, you can contact the Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-457-2377 and they will direct you to the appropriate specialist.
Please remember, while your work is important, your physical mental health is even more so. The Farm Stress Line is a confidential service, available 24-7, and is confidential. If you need to talk, don’t hesitate to call toll-free at 1-800-667-4442 or visit the Farm Stress Line website.
October is Agriculture Month in Saskatchewan, and we should all feel proud to celebrate this important sector. Thank you for all that you do.
