New CT Scanner Improves Services for Patients in Lloydminster Area

Released on November 24, 2017

A new computed tomography (CT) scanner installed at Lloydminster Hospital now provides more detailed information for diagnostics and the direction of treatment, while reducing radiation exposure for patients.

Lloydminster MLA Colleen Young on behalf of Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit joined representatives from the Prairie North Health Region, Lloydminster Region Health Foundation, hospital staff, donors, volunteers, and community leaders at a ceremony celebrating the $1.2 million 160 slice CT scanner.  The previous unit was a 16 slice scanner.

“Our government is proud to contribute $600,000 toward enhanced CT services in Lloydminster and the surrounding area,” Young said.  “This investment reflects our commitment to ensuring patients have access to high-quality, timely medical diagnostics as close to home as possible.”

The provincial government provided half the cost for purchasing and installing the new scanner.  The Lloydminster Region Health Foundation has launched a campaign to match the provincial amount, with a fundraising dinner planned in January.

“Prairie North Health Region is proud to deliver improved diagnostic services to our patients with our new CT scanner,” Prairie North Regional Health Authority Chairperson Bonnie O’Grady said.  “Our patients deserve the best we can provide, as do our staff with modern up-to-date equipment.  We are grateful to the Ministry of Health and Lloydminster Region Health Foundation for your support of this important project.”

“A number of years ago, the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation helped fund the CT scanner at Lloydminster Hospital,” Lloydminster Region Health Foundation Chairperson Darrel Howell said.  “This was a great step forward, and the old unit served the community well.  In the intervening years, the technology has progressed greatly.  Our new scanner is more accurate, and reduces exposure to radiation.  We are proud to be part of this project once again.”

During the renovation of the imaging suite and installation of the new equipment, the health region arranged for a mobile scanner at the hospital, so patients could continue to receive service.  The first patient examinations with the new equipment took place on November 6, 2017.
