Saskatoon Company Pleads Guilty to OHS Violation

Released on March 24, 2017

A Saskatoon company pleaded guilty to one count under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and was fined $60,200.

B.N. Steel & Metal (2002) Inc. pleaded guilty on March 23, 2017, to contravening clause 137(1)(a) of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 (failure to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine).

The company was fined $43,000 plus a surcharge of $17,200 in Saskatoon Provincial Court.  Two additional charges were stayed in court.

Charges stem from an incident that occurred on July 1, 2015.  A worker had his arm amputated above the elbow after becoming entangled in a metal shredder.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety works with employers and workers to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses by ensuring compliance with OHS legislation through education, inspections, and enforcement.
