The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to proclaim May 9 to 15, Women Entrepreneurs Week in Saskatchewan. The week provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the successes of women entrepreneurs in Saskatchewan and their contributions to the province’s economy. The number of self-employed women in Saskatchewan grew by 21.6 per cent from 30,100 in 2005 to 36,600 in 2015. The province’s women entrepreneurs contribute to various business areas, including professional services, wholesale and retail trade and the hospitality industries.
“Our province’s women entrepreneurs are very important to our economy,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “Through innovation and courage, they provide countless opportunities and jobs for Saskatchewan people. This is why organizations like Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan play a vital role in the province. They empower women with the knowledge, resources and supports to succeed in their businesses, and help Saskatchewan grow.”
Events planned this week include a two-day annual business conference and a networking session, organized by Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan. The organization has provided business advisory and support services, loans, mentorship, learning and networking opportunities to hundreds of women, since its inception in 1995.
“Starting your own business is never easy,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Donna Harpauer said. “Women-led businesses are creating jobs, strengthening small business sectors and making a real contribution to the prosperity and growth of our communities and economy. Our government recognizes the key role played by women entrepreneurs. Through innovative and forward thinking, they are helping to keep Saskatchewan strong.”
“While women enter self-employment at the same rate as men, women don’t scale up their businesses to the same extent, yet they contribute billions to our economy,” Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan CEO Prabha Mitchell said. “The designation of this week as Women Entrepreneurs Week is vital in recognizing the contributions of women entrepreneurs in our province.”
