New Affordable Housing Project Underway in Moose Jaw

The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with the Moose Jaw Non-Profit Housing Corporation (MJNP), officially broke ground for the construction of Wakamow Place, a 12-unit affordable rental housing project for individuals with complex needs.

Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Moose Jaw Wakamow Greg Lawrence, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer, made the announcement today.

“Our government is investing in affordable housing to help create jobs and improve the quality of life for families who need it most,” said Duclos.  “This funding will help people in Moose Jaw and throughout Saskatchewan access safe and affordable housing that meets their needs.”

“We continue to support those in greatest housing need by providing funding for projects like Wakamow Place,” Lawrence said.  “This is just one more project that will help us reach our goal on reducing poverty as we address gaps in supply and services and to increase housing availability for low-income and vulnerable people.  Our goal is to keep Saskatchewan strong and together with our partners, we are making progress.”

“The strength of continuing partnerships in our community with supports from the Federal and Provincial Government is demonstrated in this project,” Five Hills Health Region Director of Adult Community Services Anne-Marie Ursan said.  “This project responds to the service demands of citizens that are active in their recovery from mental illness and/or addictions.  It represents commitment to Housing First principles and advances the progress of those who can only move forward when they have housing that is accessible, safe and affordable.  Thunder Creek Rehabilitation is pleased to support the tenants who are the beneficiaries of this project and is grateful for the progressive initiative of the Moose Jaw Non-Profit Housing Corporation.”

Quick facts:
  • The project consists of the construction of a 12-unit, three-storey building at 244 Manitoba Street East in Moose Jaw.  All units will be one-bedroom and average 510 square feet (47.4 square metres).
  • The Federal and Provincial Governments, through CMHC and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), are jointly contributing about $1.2 million toward the 12 units under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 Agreement.
  • Approximately $680,000 in funding will be provided by MJNP in the form of cash/land equity and mortgage financing.
  • The project is a collaboration of MJNP and Thunder Creek Rehabilitation Association Inc.
  • This investment supports the Saskatchewan Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
