Scale Officer

The primary role of a Saskatchewan Highway Patrol scale officer is to protect highway infrastructure and ensure the safety of all highway users. They ensure commercial vehicle compliance with the National Safety Code requirements and Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance standards by conducting inspections at permanent Commercial Vehicle Inspection Stations across the province.

1. Become a Scale Officer

To become a scale officer in Saskatchewan, you must:

  • be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • able to work independently and as a team member within the workplace, community and enforcement agencies;
  • complete a physical or medical assessment and pass the Sheriff Officer Physical Abilities Test (SOPAT) in six minutes or less;
  • have a First Aid CPR AED certificate valid at least one year after the date of application;
  • have a valid driver’s licence (from any province or class);
  • have experience, education and/or training in law enforcement (commercial vehicle mechanics and commercial transportation are valued assets);
  • complete a certified criminal record check;
  • demonstrate psychological compatibility; and
  • meet defensive tactics qualification standards.

2. Responsibilities

Scale officers enforce transportation legislation, policies and agreements for commercial vehicles travelling along Saskatchewan highways. Their responsibilities include:

  • checking commercial vehicle operators for licensing, certification and insurance; and
  • inspecting commercial vehicles for safety, weight, dimensions, permits and registration.

Scale officers work shift schedules and some assignments may involve travel with overnight stays away from headquarters for provincial enforcement projects or training.
