Fellowship and Travel Scholarships to Study in French

The Federal-Provincial Fellowship and Travel Scholarships provide an opportunity for minority-language and second-language students to pursue post-secondary French education in Saskatchewan and out-of-province, when courses are not available to them in Saskatchewan.

1. Eligibility

Every candidate must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Be a resident of Saskatchewan for the 12 months immediately before the study period start date; and
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student (i.e. 9 credit hours per semester) in an eligible post-secondary program.

Each individual scholarship has additional requirements. Please review each scholarship below for those criteria.

2. Scholarships Available

There are two main scholarships available to students looking to pursue post-secondary studies in French:

  • The Federal-Provincial Fellowship Scholarship to Study in French; and
  • The Federal-Provincial Travel Scholarship to Study in French.

Federal-Provincial Fellowship Scholarship to Study in French

Within the Fellowship Bursary, there are five options that applicants may qualify for:

French Language Bachelor of Education (Baccalauréat en éducation)

Requirements:

  • Be registered as a full-time student in the Bachelor of Education (Baccalauréat en éducation) program at the University of Regina;
  • Take 60% of the program in French;
  • Spend one year of the program as a full-time student at Laval University; and
  • Sign a contract to complete all four years of the undergraduate program.

Students awarded the French Language Bachelor of Education Scholarship receive:

  • $500 a semester if attending the University of Regina; or
  • $2,000 a semester if attending a compulsory year at Laval University (No Travel Scholarship).

This scholarship is renewable each semester until a student has received the $7,000 maximum.

Bachelor of Education after Degree in French

Requirements:

  • Be registered as a full-time student in the Bachelor of Education after Degree program in French at the University of Regina; and
  • Take 60% of the program in French.

Students awarded the Bachelor of Education after Degree in French Scholarship receive:

  • $500 a semester if attending the University of Regina; or
  • $1,000 a semester if attending a bilingual or francophone Canadian institution outside of Saskatchewan.

Medicine Program for Francophones

Requirements:

  • Be registered as a full-time student in the Medicine program in a recognized Francophone or bilingual Canadian post-secondary institution;
  • Take 60% of the program in French;
  • Be a Saskatchewan Francophone citizen who has the right to education in the language of the minority (French in Saskatchewan);
  • Sign a contract agreeing to complete all four years of the Medicine Program in French;
  • Sign a contract agreeing to work two years in medicine in Saskatchewan; and
  • Provide proof of employment from your employer in Saskatchewan for the two years of obligatory service.

Students awarded the Medicine Program for Francophones receive $5,000 a semester if attending a bilingual or francophone Canadian institution outside of Saskatchewan.

Certificate in Common Law in French

Requirements:

  • Be a registered University of Saskatchewan College of Law student enrolled full-time in the Certificate in Common Law in French offered in partnership with the University of Ottawa; and
  • Spend one semester of the program as a full-time student at the University of Ottawa.

Students awarded the Certificate in Common Law in French receive up to $4,500 in scholarships as follows:

  • $500 a semester if attending the program at the University of Saskatchewan;
  • $1,000 when attending the program at the University of Ottawa for one semester; and
  • Federal-Provincial Travel Scholarship to Study in French of $1,000 when attending the program at the University of Ottawa for one semester.

Federal-Provincial Travel Scholarship to Study in French

Requirements:

  • Be registered as a full-time student in a post-secondary program that leads to a degree, diploma, certificate or graduate degree. The program must last at least 12 weeks at a bilingual or francophone Canadian institution outside of the province; and
  • Take 80% of the program in French and be attending the program in person.

The Travel Scholarship is equivalent to the price of a return, economy-class air ticket from Saskatchewan to an out-of-province location. The scholarship is renewable each semester. There is no maximum amount under this bursary.

Students enrolled at a Saskatchewan post-secondary institution or enrolled in online studies at an out-of-province institution are not eligible for the travel scholarship.

Fellowship Scholarship

Requirements:

  • Be registered as a full-time student in a post-secondary program that leads to a degree, diploma, certificate or graduate degree. The program must last at least 12 weeks at a bilingual or francophone Canadian institution; and
  • Take 60% of the program in French.

Students awarded the Fellowship Scholarship receive:

  • $500 a semester if attending a Saskatchewan post-secondary institution; or
  • $1,000 a semester if attending a bilingual or francophone Canadian institution outside of Saskatchewan.

This scholarship is renewable each semester until a student has received the $4,000 maximum.

3. How to Apply

Applicants use the same form to apply for both the Federal-Provincial Fellowship Scholarship and the Travel Scholarship.

In addition to the completed online application, students need to forward a copy of their Social Insurance Number (SIN), confirmation of enrolment from their school, and the direct deposit form.

Please upload and attach the confirmation of enrolment form, direct deposit form, and a copy of your SIN to your online application, or fax to (306)787-1608.

Application Deadlines:

  • Fall semester must be received by October 31.
  • Winter semester must be received by February 28.
  • Spring/summer semester must be received by June 30.

For subsequent applications, students must complete a new application and confirmation of enrolment each semester, however new banking information and a copy of your SIN are not required.

4. Apply

Required documents and forms

To receive your scholarship, please provide ALL of this information:

  • the application form (completed online);
  • a copy of your Social Insurance Number (SIN);
  • a Direct Deposit Authorization form;
  • a Confirmation of Enrolment form, completed by your education institution

To apply online, you need to:

  1. Sign in or register to create a Saskatchewan Account. You must have an active email address to apply online.
  2. Answer all of the questions and attach documents to complete your application, such as a copy of your SIN, Direct Deposit form and Confirmation of Enrolment form.
  3. You can access your online application 24 hours a day, save and exit at any time.
  4. Protect your identity! After you are finished, always remember to use the Sign Out function from your Saskatchewan account, clear history/cookies and close the browser completely.

Privacy

The Ministry of Advanced Education and educational institutions may exchange students' personal information in the administration of the Federal-Provincial Fellowship and Travel Scholarships to Study in French. All reasonable steps will be taken to protect the confidentiality and integrity of the information submitted.

Appeal

A student who is denied the Federal-Provincial Fellowship and Travel Scholarships to Study in French can request the ministry review the case by sending an email to studentservices@gov.sk.ca. Students must provide a reason why their case should be re-evaluated.

The ministry will check eligibility, request any additional information it needs and respond with its decision.
