Becoming a Marriage Commissioner

Learn about the requirements for becoming a civil marriage commissioner and how to apply.

The marriage commissioner appointment and application process is set out in The Marriage Act, 2021 and The Marriage Regulations, 2022.

Individuals applying to become civil marriage commissioners must complete the application form.

Eligibility criteria

Applicant must:

  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Be a permanent resident of Saskatchewan;
  • Have a clean criminal record check;
  • Only perform civil ceremonies; no reference to religion can be made by a marriage commissioner.

Application processing

  • Processing takes four to six weeks;
  • Expediting processing is not available.

Applicants must include:

  • Completed application form
  • Clean criminal record check
    • Obtained within the last six months, and
    • Performed by municipal police agency or local RCMP detachment; third-party checks will be rejected.
  • Copy of applicants' resume
  • Three reference letters
  • Application fee

Application fees

Fees must be paid by cheque of money order only:

  • $100 for a term (one day) appointment; or
  • $200 for a five-year term appointment.

Commissioner fees

Marriage commissioner fees, including mileage, are determined by the marriage commissioner after discussions with the parties involved.
