The Adoption Act Amendments

Saskatchewan is modernizing adoption legislation to better support identity, connection and cultural belonging for children and families. The proposed amendments focus on exploring ways to support access to information, connection to culture and identity, and improve transparency.

Indigenous identity, culture, language and community will be central to the revised legislation.

1. What is Changing

The Adoption Act, 1998 is Saskatchewan’s law that governs how adoptions are carried out in the province. The Ministry of Social Services is reviewing proposed amendments to ensure adoption legislation better reflects today’s social, cultural and legal landscapes, and supports families and children in a clear and consistent way.

Proposed amendments focus on four areas:

  • Enhancing cultural continuity and community connections
  • Reducing barriers to family connections
  • Clarifying residency requirements
  • Strengthening safeguards for children in interprovincial and private adoptions
