The Ministry of Highways is working on safety and capacity improvements on Highways 2, 3 and 55 north of Prince Albert. The study will look at ways to relieve traffic flow pressures and help accommodate future truck traffic travelling in the area.
Study area includes:
- North Intersections: Highway 2 and 15 St. NE, Highway 2 and Pine St., and Highways 3 and 55
- South Intersections: Highway 2 and 11 and Highway 2 and Elevator Road
The height restriction along Riverside Drive travelling under the Highway 2 overpass prohibits large truck traffic from accessing Highway 2 south. Currently, there is a truck bypass route to direct truck traffic from the junction of Highway 3 and Highway 55 on to Central Avenue north, and to 15 St. NE and over to Highway 2.
The large volume of trucks turning at Highway 2 and 15 St. NE, and the narrow median contribute to queuing issues. Capacity issues also exist at the intersections of Highway 2 and Pine St.
A pulp and paper area along Highway 55 east, generates forestry vehicles along the three highways. It is expected the pulp and paper mill will increase activity, generating larger amounts of truck traffic.
