Saskatchewan Recognizes Global Biotech Week

Released on September 19, 2025

Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison has proclaimed September 20 to 27, 2025 as Global Biotech Week in Saskatchewan. This week celebrates the benefits that biotechnology has brought to the province and how it will contribute to our future economic growth.

Saskatchewan's biotech sector is recognized internationally, with one-third of Canada's agricultural biotechnology sector located in the province. The province's research institutes are world leaders in the fields of crop breeding, genetics and genomics.

"Thanks to made-in-Saskatchewan biotech innovations, our producers can grow crops with higher yields and increased resilience, and our livestock producers have more productive herds," Harrison said. "Overall, our industry is more productive, profitable and sustainable."

"Global Biotech Week brings together scientists, entrepreneurs, educators, students and the public to build awareness of how bioscience is helping to shape Saskatchewan's future," Ag-West Bio Interim Chief Executive Officer Karen Churchill said.

Ag-West Bio coordinates activities across the province to mark the week. Events are planned for primary, secondary and post-secondary students as well as the public, highlighting Saskatchewan research infrastructure and biotech businesses. Events are accessible to people all over the province, with in-person events taking place in Saskatoon and Regina, as well as several webinars offered online. A highlight will be the Amazing Biotech Race, where high school and Sask Polytechnic students are invited to explore the Innovation Saskatchewan Research and Technology Park in Saskatoon and discover its wide range of biotechnology businesses.

Members of the public are encouraged to check out the activities planned this week to showcase the province's bioeconomy, including how science benefits agriculture. A full list of this year's events is available at www.globalbiotechweeksask.ca/.
