Provincial and territorial energy and mines ministers from across Canada have concluded the annual Energy and Mines Ministers' Conference (EMMC) in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, which focused on Canadian energy security, building resource sector export capacity and strengthening competitiveness.
Energy and Resources Minister Colleen Young represented Saskatchewan at the three-day event to advance the province's resource development interests.
"With global demand increasing for Saskatchewan's resource commodities, our energy and mining sectors are poised to experience considerable growth in the years ahead," Energy and Resources Minister Colleen Young said. "But for this potential to become reality, we need to work with our federal and provincial counterparts to grow export access to global markets, streamline more stable and predictable regulatory processes and increase investor confidence in Canada. Saskatchewan is at the table, and ready to play a large role in making Canada the strongest economy in the G7 and a global energy super-power."
The theme of this year's EMMC was Securing the Future of Canada's Energy and Mines Sectors. Energy and mining ministers held productive discussions about the need to accelerate major resource projects, including uranium mines, in support of building a strong and unified Canada and reducing reliance on the U.S. and other foreign markets. The ministers highlighted the need for efficient federal regulatory processes, recognition of provincial authority and to provide more certainty to strengthen investor confidence. Ministers discussed a wide range of provincial and territorial projects including new oil and gas pipelines, electricity transmission lines, trade and energy corridors and port infrastructure and expediting the nuclear licensing process.
In discussions with her federal, provincial and territorial counterparts, Minister Young highlighted the importance of prioritizing investment in trade and export infrastructure including western and northern economic corridors, coastal ports and pipelines. Increasing pipeline and rail capacity, in particular, are key for Western Canada to get products to international markets.
Energy and Mines Ministers will reconvene in Fall 2025 to review progress on priority projects. The 2026 EMMC will be hosted by the Northwest Territories in Yellowknife.
