Major Highway Construction Continues, Motorists May Encounter Travel Delays

With the September long weekend approaching, the Ministry of Highways wants to remind motorists to travel safely through work zones. 

"This has been an excellent construction season due to warm and sunny weather,"  noted Highways Minister Fred Bradshaw.  "With the Labour Day weekend approaching, we know many folks will be squeezing in as many kilometres as possible on Saskatchewan's roads.  We ask that they remember to slow down, take their time and stay safe in the Orange Zone." 

Work continues to progress on many projects around Saskatchewan, including a $1.7 million rehabilitation of the two northbound bridges on Highway 11 near Lumsden.  Crews have completed one lane on each bridge, with concrete pouring of the second lanes anticipated later this week if weather permits. 

Motorists will see minimal disruptions, with flagpersons controlling traffic as trucks maneuver into the open lane.  Traffic will continue to be restricted to one lane over each bridge, with speeds reduced to 80 km/h before entering the valley and restricted to 60 km/h through the construction site.  Speed fines remain tripled, so motorists are advised to take extra caution.  Oversized loads will be accommodated, provided the Highways Hotline is given 24 hours' notice. 

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $10.6 billion in highways infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 17,100 km of Saskatchewan highways.  Another $300 million in highways stimulus funds is being invested over several years in thin-membrane surface upgrades, passing lanes and improvements to municipal roads and airports.

A weekly construction update on the Highway Hotline provides Saskatchewan residents with the latest details on current projects to help plan safe and efficient travel throughout the summer and fall.
